How Text to ASCII Art Works
A text-to-ASCII generator takes your input string, looks up each character's glyph in a FIGlet font definition file, and stitches the multi-line glyphs side-by-side to produce the final banner. Different fonts render the same letter using different character patterns — Standard uses pipes and underscores for a clean look, while Banner uses solid hash blocks for maximum impact.
Asciify generates banners server-side using a streamlined FIGlet implementation, so the output is identical across browsers. Banners render in under 50 ms and respect your chosen output width — useful when you need the result to fit a fixed-width terminal, README, or email signature.
Once generated, layer on retro effects such as CRT scanlines, matrix rain, glitch shifting, or neon glow. Effects are CSS-based for live preview and are baked into the pixels when you export to PNG or GIF. For sharing, the "copy share link" button creates a self-contained URL that recreates the same banner anywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I make a text banner in ASCII art?
- Type the text command into the terminal followed by your message — for example, 'text Hello'. Asciify converts it into a multi-line ASCII banner using FIGlet fonts. Switch fonts on the fly with the 'font' command (try Standard, Slant, Big, Banner, Block, or Mini).
- Which FIGlet fonts can I use?
- Asciify ships with 30+ FIGlet fonts including Standard, Slant, Big, Banner, Block, Doom, Lean, Mini, Shadow, Small, and many more. Each produces a distinct visual style — from compact one-line text to bold multi-line headers.
- Can I add color or retro effects to my ASCII text?
- Yes. Pick a colour with the 'color' command (green, amber, cyan, pink) and add CRT scanlines, glitch, matrix rain, or neon glow effects. Effects are baked into the PNG/GIF export so they stay when you share the artwork.
- How do I share a text ASCII art banner?
- Click Share to copy a self-contained URL that recreates the banner with the same font, colour, and effects on any device. You can also save it to the public gallery, copy as plain text, or download as TXT, PNG, GIF, or HTML.
