The best ASCII art generators in 2026, compared

Eight free ASCII art tools, compared on what they actually do: image conversion, FIGlet text banners, Braille, color, animation and export formats. Updated October 2026.

Disclosure and method

We build asciify.art, so we are not neutral. To keep this fair, the table lists only features each tool states on its own public pages, checked in October 2026, and says “not stated” or “varies” where a page did not say. We include the cases where other tools beat ours: asciify.art has far fewer fonts than the banner specialists and no SVG export. Features change often, so check the tool before you rely on a detail.

Which one should you use?

  • Text banners for a README or terminal:patorjk TAAG is the long-standing favorite and Jasper Bernaers' generator has about 300 fonts. asciify.art has 35 fonts but adds effects, colors and share links.
  • One photo, maximum control: asciiart.eu and Jasper Bernaers expose several dithering algorithms and edge modes; Jasper also exports SVG and shell scripts.
  • Video, GIFs and webcam: asciify.art converts all three locally and adds animated retro effects. Most image converters only take still images or the first GIF frame.
  • Design work:Canva's apps drop the result straight into a design, at the cost of fine-grained settings.
  • Privacy-sensitive images: prefer tools that convert in the browser; ascii-art-generator.org uploads files.

Every tool here is free to start. If you need to convert a lot of images, try two or three with the same picture: character sets and dithering differ more than feature lists suggest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free ASCII art generator?
It depends on the job. For text banners, patorjk TAAG and Jasper Bernaers' generator have the biggest font libraries. For tuning a single image, asciiart.eu and Jasper Bernaers offer the most knobs. For video, GIF and webcam input with retro effects, asciify.art covers the most ground.
Which generators keep my images private?
Tools that convert in the browser never send the image anywhere: asciify.art does all conversion locally, and Jasper Bernaers' tools work offline once loaded. ascii-art-generator.org uploads images to its server. Other sites do not say, so assume an upload unless stated.
Can AI chatbots make ASCII art?
Chatbots can write small ASCII doodles from memory, but they often struggle to draw an accurate picture of a specific photo. A converter maps the real pixels of your image to characters, so the result matches the source.
